BIOGRAPHY

Hello, my name is Sarah Virgo and I am from the town of Carterville, located just ten miles outside of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I am currently a senior in Agriculture and Consumer Economics with a concentration in Policy, International Trade, and Development. After I graduate with my undergrad degree, I would like to spend a year in Germany to improve upon my current German language skills, learn more about my heritage, and gain an insight on one of the world’s leading countries in sustainable agriculture. I would then like to attend graduate school and study the reduction of poverty through sustainable agriculture practices. When I was five, I started climbing a tree in my front yard which inspired my love for the outdoors. From then on I have always loved exploring the Shawnee National Forest through hiking, biking, and working for the Crab Orchard Visitor's Center. I also enjoy traveling on a shoestring budget, reading in my Hammock on sunny days, and cooking all sorts of delicious recipes from old cookbooks.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

It seems like everyone knows someone, whether it be an immediate family member, themselves or friends of friends who has or is fighting some type of cancer. I also know people will continue to fight until there is a cure. From since I can remember till my junior year in college, I have had family members and mentors who have battled cancer. Understanding how cancer drains our bodies, our finances, and our hearts, I believe Illini 4000 is doing an amazing thing for anyone who has had a run in with the disease. A quote from Dr. Seuss states, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” This summer, I want to unite and ignite people who care a “whole awful lot” by riding across the country as an ally for the fight against cancer. By raising money for cancer research and spreading awareness of the personal stories cancer has infected, I hope to show people affected by cancer that others do care and because of it, it will get better.
