Biography

Hi I’m Sam! I’m a Senior dual degree student in computer science and statistics. I also have done research in a number of areas — particularly indigenous communities, climate change, and computational political science. Outside of school, I really enjoy exploring innovative music genres.

Personal Statement

I joined I4K because I know firsthand how devastating cancer can be. Both of my parents have cancer, and have benefit from drugs created in clinical research. I look forward to using my experience as a caregiver to advocate for cancer research, and to learn more about the experiences of other cancer patients.

Lauren Faber

Lauren Faber

Major: Food Science

Hometown: Hawthorn Woods, IL

Biography

Hi, my name is Lauren Faber. I’m a sophomore studying Food Science and I’m also apart of the Association of Food Technologists. In my free time I love to bake, travel, and sing with my sisters! I love staying active whether it’s playing sports with my friends or going to the gym for a quick workout. I can’t wait to see more of the country and contribute to this cause!

Personal Statement

I joined Illini 4000 because I’ve never had the opportunity to be a part of making such a significant impact on others' lives. After my grandma passed away this summer from breast cancer, I knew I wanted to help others who have gone through the same thing. Cancer has affected more people than I can even imagine and riding for Illini 4000 is the least I can do to show my support for cancer research. I want to use my privilege and spread awareness for those who can’t.

Parker Bledsoe

Hometown: Monticello, Illinois

Major: Business

Biography

Hello! My name is Parker and I am attending Parkland studying business. I am from Monticello, Illinois. In my free time I love to run. I actually completed my first marathon last spring! I am very excited to be part of the 2026 Bike America Team and am looking forward to biking across the country for a good cause.

Personal Statement

I have always enjoyed endurance sports and activities, so when I heard about an opportunity to bike across the country I was instantly intrigued. Especially a ride like this where I will be able to train with and meet people from all different backgrounds and hear their stories. I am also greatly looking forward to the bonds that I will make throughout this ride. My idea to participate in the ride was then solidified when I heard about the mission of I4K. As part of I4K, the mission is to help fund cancer research and support individuals that have been affected by cancer. Cancer has not personally affected me, but I have seen how it has affected the lives of many others. Through raising money and meeting others whose lives it has affected, I hope to make a difference in many people's lives along the way.

Ehsan Homaee

Ehsan Homaee

Hometown: Shahreza, Iran

Major: Biophysics

Biography

Hi! I’m Ehsan—final-year PhD student in Biophysics. I study how tiny viruses make “decisions” inside single bacterial cells (the smallest boardroom you’ve ever seen). When I’m not coding or in the lab, I’m on a bike (unless it’s Midwest winter), hiking, camping, blasting music, or losing graciously at board games with friends. My bike obsession started as a kid: the neighborhood crew and I would ride with absolutely no destination—pure freedom on two wheels. It later became my favorite way to commute, and now with Illini 4000, I get to turn that joy into something meaningful: biking across the country to help fight cancer, hear people’s stories, and prove that quads (front-of-thighs, not front-of-Foellinger) + kindness can go a long way.

Personal Statement

I’m riding for my grandma Touran, my friend Amirhossein, and my cousins Elham and Saadat. My grandma, Touran, was my first home outside of home—the one who slipped extra fruit into my pockets. At 56 she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and given six months; she gave us twelve more years. In a small town, when most women her age stayed at home or feared starting a business, she ran one. She spoke her mind, laughed loudly, and refused to shrink to fit anyone’s frame or fear anyone’s judgment. She also lived wide: saying yes to small adventures, celebrating ordinary days, and grasping every joy she could find—even during treatment. When the road gets steep, I hear her: keep going; take the joy that’s yours. I met Amirhossein on the first day of middle school. We shared a desk and became friends for life. For years we had a Tuesday ritual: a movie, and fast food afterward. In 2020, from an ocean away, he told me he had tongue cancer. A few months later, he was gone at 25. On long rides, I still set a quiet place for him in my mind. I carry our Tuesdays. Elham was an artist and a teacher who made rooms brighter just by walking in. Diagnosed with late-stage metastatic breast cancer at 26, she endured five years of pain with stubborn grace and a smile that made you believe in better days. She passed at 31. Her students—and our family—still speak in the colors she taught us to see. Saadat was an electrical engineer, diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer at 40. He fought for two years while being a loving father to two little ones. I think about his kids when I’m tired; the pedals feel lighter when I remember who we’re riding for. This ride is for them—and for everyone whose life has been touched by cancer. It’s for every family learning words no one wants to learn, for every good day wrestled back from a hard week, for every extra year a treatment can give. Mile by mile, I want to turn grief into motion and love into fuel, and help into something you can measure—in research funded, in services provided, and in time returned to the people we love.

Cole Pawlak

Cole Pawlak

Hometown: Big Flats, New York

Major: Aerospace Engineering

Biography

Hi! My name is Cole and I am a second year masters student in Aerospace Engineering. Although much of my time is devoted to classes and my research in sustainable aviation, I still try to have fun in the world outside of school whenever I can. On a day that I am feeling energized, you will often find me out on a bicycle (very fitting, I know!), kicking a soccer ball, or exploring the great outdoors. For those less motivated times, I’ll be watching whatever is happening in the Formula 1 world or trying out a new recipe.

Personal Statement

I learned about the Illini 4000 mission and ride 2 years ago when I first came to the University of Illinois and thought that it was such a special group I would have to join before my time studying was up. Well, here I am! I love that we will be forming a team of support pushing for such a noble cause as the fight against cancer. Members of my family have confronted their own battles with cancer and I can only hope that my efforts here give back to the community or allow someone else who is struggling to feel they are not alone. As we fundraise, ride, and share stories, and raise awareness across the United States, the journey through this year with this team will all be worthwhile if we can make a difference for even just one person. I will ride for those who cannot, but maybe one day can.
