BIOGRAPHY

Hello, my name is Shun Toyoshi. I am studying Mechanical Engineering at Nagoya University in Japan. I am an exchange student here in the College of Engineering for one year. I have been passionate about sports since I was young. I started playing basketball at the age of 12 and continued to play for ten years. Not only basketball, but I am also interested in running. I have completed two marathons with my friends in the past, one in Honolulu and another in Osaka, Japan. Other than sports, traveling is my passion. I stayed at several farms in New Zealand as a part of the host family program. I practiced my English there while working with my host family. I also volunteered in India for two months for Non-Governmental Organization. I was able to experience a new culture and work with people internationally. Now, I am looking forward to spending the last few months of my study abroad program with the Illini 4000 team and exploring the United States.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My aunt passed away from breast cancer when I was young. Ever since then, cancer has affected my life in many ways. I became interested in raising awareness for my aunt and for anyone who is battling the disease. This past year, my mother had a cancer scare when her doctor questioned her health. Fortunately, she was not diagnosed, however, this occurrence made me more aware about the disease. Now, as a member of the Illini 4000, I am committed to increase awareness of cancer during summer and gain unforgettable and insightful experience at the end.
