BIOGRAPHY

Hi everyone, my name is Anthony. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I spent most of my life in the big city before my family moved to the United States when I was 18. My family consists of my wonderful parents and my amazing brother, who are always supportive in whatever I do. By the time the trip begins, I will, hopefully, have graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Engineering Physics. After graduation, I plan to go to graduate school and pursue a research career in biophysics. Most of the time you can find me in the physics building, either nerding out with other physics majors or messing around with virtual biomolecules in my research lab. When I am not studying or working, I spend my time climbing things (mostly rock, sometimes plastic, and occasionally buildings). Of all styles of climbing, I enjoy the thrill and exposure of traditional climbing the most. I love climbing because it is physical and mentally demanding and also because it is a wonderful way to appreciate the natural world and meet all types of people. For the same reasons, I decided to participate in the Illini 4000. What is better than a cycling adventure with a team of amazing people for a worthy cause? Fun fact: I had never ridden a bike before my freshman year in college. I feel very fortunate to have the chance to ride across the country this summer, raising money and awareness for the fight against cancer, and hopefully making a difference in people's lives, no matter how tiny it is.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer when I was 6. It was very fortunate that she was diagnosed at the early stage and survived the experience even though she had to have 3/4 of her stomach removed. At that time, I was too young to really understand what was going on. It wasn't until a few years later when I realized how much hardship my mom had to go through and how lucky my family was. Now I have come to the age that I can finally do something personally against cancer; I'd like to take advantage of this opportunity. In particular, I would like to raise money to support promoting public awareness and research of cancer. I hope to meet inspiring individuals and in turn inspire people in the fight against cancer.
